Developing frameworks for mobile learning helps us move beyond simply using technology to creating meaningful learning experiences that leverage the unique capabilities of mobile devices.

Six theoretical perspectives on mobile learning
In 2004, researchers Laura Naismith, Peter Lonsdale, Giasemi Vavoula, and Mike Sharples published a comprehensive literature review that identified six major theoretical approaches to mobile learning. These frameworks help educators understand how mobile devices can support different types of learning activities.
Behaviorist learning through mobile devices
The behaviorist approach focuses on reinforcement and feedback. In mobile learning environments, this translates to providing immediate feedback to learners through their devices. For example, quiz apps that instantly show whether an answer is correct or incorrect help learners modify their responses and reinforce correct behaviors. This approach works well for drill-and-practice activities and skill development.
Constructivist mobile learning
Constructivist approaches recognize that learners actively build knowledge based on their experiences. Mobile devices enable learners to construct new ideas around their previous knowledge through simulations and interactive environments. Students become active participants in three-dimensional or dynamic mobile learning settings where they explore concepts at their own pace.
Situational and context-aware learning
One of mobile learning’s most distinctive features is its ability to adapt to different contexts. Situational learning takes advantage of this by adjusting content to each learning situation and location. Context-sensitive applications in museums, botanical gardens, or historical sites provide learners with information relevant to their immediate physical environment, making learning more authentic and engaging.
Collaborative learning opportunities
Mobile devices facilitate cooperative learning through social interactions. Students can exchange information and collaborate regardless of their physical location. While Naismith’s themes provide useful categories, Mike Sharples and colleagues developed a more comprehensive theoretical framework based on activity theory. Their approach, published in The SAGE Handbook of E-Learning Research, examines mobile learning through two interconnected layers.
The semiotic layer of learning
The semiotic layer describes learning as a system where learners’ object-oriented actions are mediated by cultural tools and signs. In this view, mobile devices don’t just deliver content-they mediate how learners interact with knowledge. When students use a mobile app to identify plants in a garden or solve mathematical problems, the device becomes part of their meaning-making process.
The technological layer of interaction
The technological layer represents learning as direct engagement with technology, where tools such as computers and mobile phones function as interactive agents in the learning process. This perspective recognizes that mobile devices aren’t passive tools but active participants that shape how learners come to know and understand concepts.
Context as a central construct
Sharples’ framework emphasizes that context is central to understanding and designing mobile learning. Learning doesn’t just adapt to different contexts-learners and teachers continually shape their environments to meet changing needs. As mobile devices enable seamless learning across locations and times, they create both opportunities and tensions in formal education settings.
This theoretical approach draws on cultural-historical activity theory to understand how mobile learning mediates relationships between learners, learning materials, and their social and physical environments. It provides instructional designers with a framework for analyzing how mobile technologies can support complex learning activities.
Mobigogy: A new pedagogical paradigm
As mobile learning has matured, researchers have recognized that it requires pedagogical approaches specifically designed for mobile environments. This led to the emergence of “mobigogy”-a term combining mobile learning and pedagogy.
Defining mobigogy
Introduced by researcher Keough, mobigogy represents a distinct form of pedagogy that emphasizes situated and self-regulated learning. Rather than simply adapting traditional teaching methods to mobile devices, mobigogy recognizes that mobile technology enables fundamentally different approaches to education.
Core principles of mobigogy
Mobigogy builds on several key principles. First, it emphasizes personalized learning pathways that adapt to individual learner needs. Second, it leverages context-based learning opportunities that mobile devices uniquely enable. Third, it promotes social learning through networked communication and collaboration.
The mobigogy framework encourages educators to design experiences that are “mobile-first”-meaning mobile devices are central to the learning design rather than supplementary tools. This might involve students using smartphones to research topics, document observations through photos and videos, and collaborate with peers through online platforms.
Mobigogy in practice
In practical terms, mobigogy supports the idea of continuous learning where students access educational resources at any time and place. Teachers become facilitators who guide students as they navigate mobile learning environments rather than simply delivering content. This approach recognizes learning as a social activity that prepares learners to understand different social contexts.
Integrating theoretical frameworks
These theoretical frameworks aren’t mutually exclusive-they offer complementary perspectives on mobile learning. Naismith’s six themes help educators identify which pedagogical approaches fit their learning objectives. Sharples’ activity theory provides a deeper analytical framework for understanding how mobile devices mediate learning. Mobigogy offers practical guidance for designing mobile-first learning experiences.
Together, these frameworks help educators move beyond viewing mobile devices as simply portable computers. They reveal how mobile learning can be more flexible, collaborative, and learner-centered than traditional approaches.
