Adding video clips

Click the “Add videos and photos” button in the Home tab to import video files. Movie Maker accepts common formats including MP4, AVI, and WMV. Navigate to your video files, select them, and click Open. The clips automatically appear in your workspace, arranged in the order you selected them. You can import multiple clips at once by holding Ctrl while clicking each file.

Incorporating audio

Audio adds depth to your videos. The “Add music” button lets you import audio files in formats like MP3, WAV, and WMA. Once imported, audio appears on a separate track below your video clips. Position the playhead where you want to cut, then click Split to create two separate clips. The Trim tool removes unwanted footage from the beginning or end of clips. Managing audio levels

Balanced audio makes videos more professional. Click on an audio clip to access volume controls. The Music Tools tab lets you adjust volume levels, set fade-in and fade-out times, and choose where audio starts and stops. If you have both background music and narration, lower the music volume during speaking sections to ensure clarity.

Exporting your finished video

After completing your edits, you’ll need to save your work in a format suitable for sharing or storage.

Choosing the right format

Movie Maker exports videos in several formats. MP4 offers the best balance between quality and file size, making it ideal for sharing online. This format works across different devices and platforms. WMV creates smaller files optimized for Windows systems. Consider your intended audience and distribution method when selecting a format.

Export settings and quality

The Save movie menu provides preset options for different purposes. Choose “For high-definition display” for the best quality when file size isn’t a concern. Select platform-specific options like “For YouTube” or “For Facebook” to automatically optimize settings for those services. These presets adjust resolution, frame rate, and compression to match each platform’s requirements.

Saving your project file

Remember that exporting creates a video file, but doesn’t save your project. Use “Save project” from the File menu to preserve your timeline with all clips and effects intact. This allows you to return later and make changes. Project files are small because they only store editing instructions, not the actual video content. Keep your original media files in the same location so Movie Maker can find them when you reopen the project.

Before exporting, preview your entire video to catch any issues. Check that audio levels are consistent, transitions work smoothly, and titles appear for the right duration. Export to a location where you can easily find the file. For important projects, consider exporting in multiple formats to ensure compatibility across different viewing platforms.

While Microsoft discontinued Windows Movie Maker in 2017, the fundamental editing concepts it teaches remain valuable. Understanding how to import media, arrange clips on a timeline, apply effects, and export finished videos provides a foundation for working with more advanced editing software. These core skills transfer directly to modern tools like Clipchamp, Adobe Premiere, or DaVinci Resolve.
