What is document criticism?

Document criticism refers to the evaluation techniques researchers employ to assess the authenticity, credibility, and value of their sources. According to historians Gilbert J. Garraghan and Jean Delanglez, this process involves six key inquiries: when was the source produced, where was it created, who authored it, what pre-existing materials influenced it, what is its original form, and what is the evidential value of its contents.

The importance of document criticism cannot be overstated. Using unverified, falsified, or untruthful sources leads to equally false conclusions. In historical research, this could mean perpetuating myths rather than uncovering facts. In administrative or legal contexts, it could result in decisions based on fraudulent evidence. Document criticism provides a structured framework to avoid these pitfalls.

The evaluation process divides into two complementary approaches. External criticism (sometimes called “lower criticism”) examines whether a document is genuine-focusing on its physical characteristics, origin, and authorship. Internal criticism (or “higher criticism”) evaluates the content itself-assessing whether the information presented is credible and reliable. Together, these methods ensure researchers work with sources they can trust.

External criticism: establishing authenticity

External criticism addresses a fundamental question: is this document what it claims to be? Before analyzing what a document says, researchers must first verify that it’s genuine and hasn’t been forged, altered, or misattributed.

Examining provenance and authorship

Provenance-the documented history of ownership and origin-serves as the starting point for external criticism. Researchers investigate who created the document, when and where it was produced, and for what purpose. Questions about authorship are critical: Was the supposed author actually in a position to create this document? Do other sources attribute the work to the same person? A document claiming to describe events in 18th-century France should reflect the language, terminology, and cultural references appropriate to that period. Any anachronisms-references to technologies, events, or concepts that didn’t exist at the purported time of creation-immediately raise suspicion.

Physical and material analysis

According to PBS History Detectives, documents are typically examined from historical, scientific, and stylistic perspectives. Physical analysis includes studying the paper, ink, and printing methods used. The materials must be consistent with the claimed time period-many forgeries have been exposed because they contained materials that didn’t exist when the document was supposedly created.

For printed documents, researchers examine printing techniques, typefaces, and even postal stamps if applicable. Scientific testing can establish age ranges for paper products by analyzing wood fibers, chemical additives, and surface treatments. Ink analysis using techniques like liquid chromatography can identify chemical compositions and detect whether multiple inks were used, which might indicate later alterations.

Comparison with other sources

External criticism also involves cross-referencing a document against other established sources from the same period. If a document makes claims that contradict well-documented historical facts or established records, its authenticity becomes questionable. For example, a letter supposedly written by a historical figure that references an event occurring years after that person’s death would fail this test.

According to research methodology frameworks, external criticism involves establishing whether a document can be traced back to its purported originator and whether it is consistent with known facts. This comparative approach helps researchers identify inconsistencies that might not be apparent when examining a document in isolation.

Internal criticism: assessing credibility

Once a document passes external criticism and is accepted as genuine, internal criticism evaluates the trustworthiness of its contents. A document can be authentically old and still contain inaccurate, biased, or unreliable information.

Evaluating the author’s competence and position

Internal criticism begins by assessing whether the author was in a position to know what they claim to report. R.J. Shafer’s checklist for evaluating testimony asks crucial questions: How well could the author observe what they report? Were their senses and physical location suitable for accurate observation? Did they possess the necessary expertise or language skills to understand and record events correctly?

The timing of documentation matters significantly. An account written immediately after an event is generally more reliable than one composed years later, when memory may have faded or been influenced by subsequent events. Researchers also consider whether the author faced any pressures-fear, hope, hatred, or personal motivation-that might have colored their account.

Detecting bias and intention

Every document reflects some perspective, but researchers must identify when bias significantly distorts the information presented. Internal criticism examines the author’s purpose: Were they writing to inform, persuade, justify, or celebrate? Who was the intended audience, and how might that have shaped the content?

Research on source credibility emphasizes that bias should be understood in context. A diplomatic report may present events favorably to the author’s nation. A business record may downplay failures. Personal correspondence may exaggerate emotions. Understanding these tendencies helps researchers interpret information appropriately rather than taking it at face value.

Checking consistency and accuracy

Internal criticism requires examining whether a document’s claims are internally consistent and align with verified facts. Contradictions within a single document suggest carelessness, deception, or later alterations. Claims that conflict with well-established historical knowledge require additional scrutiny.

According to academic research guidelines, if a source uses methods or draws conclusions incompatible with other research in its field, it may not be reliable. The Scandinavian historians Olden-Jรธrgensen and Thurรฉn formulated core principles noting that if multiple independent sources contain the same information, credibility increases substantially. Conversely, isolated claims without corroboration warrant skepticism.

Understanding literal versus intended meaning

Researchers must also consider whether words carried different meanings at the time of writing. Language evolves, and terms common in one era may have meant something quite different than they do today. Additionally, documents may employ irony, euphemism, or coded language that requires contextual understanding to interpret correctly.

Applying both methods in practice

External and internal criticism work as complementary processes, not alternatives. According to R.J. Shafer, external criticism serves a negative function-preventing the use of false evidence-while internal criticism has the positive function of showing how to properly use authenticated evidence.

The practical application involves a sequential approach. First, establish that a document is genuine through external criticism. Only then proceed to evaluate its content through internal criticism. A forged document’s contents become irrelevant regardless of how plausible they might seem, while a genuine document still requires careful interpretation of its information.

Modern researchers benefit from both traditional analytical methods and technological advances. Scientific testing can authenticate materials, digital tools can compare documents across vast archives, and interdisciplinary collaboration brings diverse expertise to complex evaluations. Yet the fundamental questions remain unchanged: Is this document real? And can we trust what it says?

Why document criticism matters today

While document criticism originated in historical research, its principles apply broadly in our information-saturated world. The same critical thinking that historians apply to ancient manuscripts helps researchers evaluate administrative records, journalists verify sources, and citizens assess the reliability of information they encounter daily.

In distance education research specifically, document criticism becomes essential when working with institutional records, policy documents, correspondence, and historical materials about educational developments. Whether examining the evolution of distance learning practices or analyzing administrative documents for case studies, researchers must systematically evaluate their sources’ authenticity and credibility.

Mastering document criticism transforms passive information consumers into active, critical evaluators. By asking the right questions-about origin, authorship, purpose, bias, and accuracy-researchers build more reliable foundations for their conclusions and contribute more trustworthy knowledge to their fields.
