Creating SMART objectives for better outcomes
The SMART framework provides a practical structure for writing effective instructional objectives. Originally developed for business management in 1981, this approach has been widely adapted for education because it ensures objectives are clear, focused, and achievable.
Breaking down the SMART framework
Specific: The objective should clearly state what will be accomplished and who will accomplish it. Instead of “improve writing skills,” a specific objective would be “compose a persuasive essay with a clear thesis, three supporting arguments, and appropriate evidence.”
Measurable: Include criteria for measuring progress through tangible evidence like test scores, completed projects, or demonstrated skills. Using action verbs from Bloom’s Taxonomy helps create measurable outcomes.
Achievable: Objectives must be realistic given the available time, resources, and learners’ current skill levels. Setting goals that are too ambitious can lead to frustration and decreased motivation.
Relevant: Ensure objectives align with course goals and students’ learning needs. Each objective should contribute meaningfully to broader learning outcomes.
Time-bound: Specify when learners should achieve the objective. This creates urgency and helps both instructors and students maintain steady progress throughout the learning experience.
A practical template for SMART objectives
Here’s a useful formula: “By [time], the [audience] will [action verb describing performance] as measured by [assessment method with standards].” For example: “By the end of this module, students will analyze three case studies and identify ethical issues in each, scoring at least 80% on the case study rubric.”
Understanding the three domains of learning
Effective instructional objectives address different types of learning. Bloom’s Taxonomy organizes learning into three distinct domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Each domain focuses on different aspects of human capability and requires different instructional approaches.
Cognitive domain: Mental skills and knowledge
The cognitive domain focuses on intellectual abilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and knowledge acquisition. The revised taxonomy includes six levels: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create. These levels are hierarchical, meaning learners typically master simpler skills before progressing to more complex ones.
For instance, before students can analyze historical events, they must first remember key dates and understand the context. A cognitive objective might be: “Students will compare and contrast the causes of World War I and World War II, identifying three similarities and three differences.”
Affective domain: Attitudes and values
The affective domain addresses emotions, attitudes, and values. It progresses through five levels: Receiving, Responding, Valuing, Organization, and Characterization. This domain is particularly important in distance education, where building emotional connection and engagement can be challenging.
An affective objective example: “Students will demonstrate respect for diverse perspectives by actively listening to peer presentations and providing constructive feedback that acknowledges different viewpoints.”
Psychomotor domain: Physical skills
The psychomotor domain involves physical movement, coordination, and motor skills. While Bloom’s original team didn’t fully develop this domain, later educators like Elizabeth Simpson created detailed hierarchies ranging from simple perception to complex origination of new movements.
In distance education contexts, psychomotor objectives might include: “Students will demonstrate proper camera framing techniques by recording and submitting three video presentations that follow composition guidelines.” Even in online settings, physical skills like typing speed, software navigation, or laboratory procedures can be important learning outcomes.
Aligning objectives with desired outcomes
The real power of well-crafted objectives emerges when you align them with specific learning tasks and assessment methods. This alignment ensures that what you teach, how you assess, and what students practice all point toward the same learning goals.
Examples of aligned objectives and tasks
For a cognitive objective focused on analysis, you might assign students to break down a research article into its components: hypothesis, methodology, findings, and conclusions. The assessment could involve a rubric evaluating their ability to identify and explain each component’s role in the overall argument.
For an affective objective about valuing collaboration, design group projects where students must negotiate roles, share resources, and collectively solve problems. Assessment might include peer evaluations and reflection papers where students examine how their values about teamwork evolved.
For psychomotor objectives in an online course, consider skills like creating multimedia presentations. Students might progress from basic slide creation to incorporating animations and audio narration, demonstrating increasing technical proficiency.
Common pitfalls to avoid
When writing objectives, avoid vague language like “understand,” “know,” or “appreciate” without specifying how understanding will be demonstrated. These terms are difficult to measure and leave learners unclear about expectations.
Don’t confuse learning activities with learning objectives. “Students will participate in a discussion forum” describes an activity, not an outcome. Better: “Students will synthesize course concepts by contributing three discussion posts that connect theory to personal experience.”
Avoid setting too many objectives for a single lesson or module. Focus on the most essential outcomes learners must achieve, typically three to five per instructional unit. Too many objectives can overwhelm both instructors and students.
Putting it all together
Start your instructional design process by clearly defining learning objectives before developing content or activities. Use the SMART framework to ensure objectives are specific and measurable. Consider which learning domain each objective addresses and select appropriate action verbs accordingly.
